Aspen Waite certifies as ‘On the Road’ to becoming a Net Zero Business
Aspen Waite is happy to announce it has reached the first level of certification to becoming a Net Zero business, working with climate action platform, Net Zero Now. Aspen Waite with head offices based in Somerset employing 36 staff, has calculated its Greenhouse Gas emissions for a full year of operations, and created a reduction plan to cut emissions, as well as committing to compensating for any unavoidable emissions and set a target date for implementation. Upon hitting those reduction targets by the due date Aspen Waite will reach the second stage of certification and become fully ‘Net Zero’.
With the world in climate crisis, the global scientific community agrees that reaching Net Zero is the best chance we have of keeping global warming to manageable levels. The UK government has set a target for our economy to be Net Zero by 2050, and while many businesses want to take action, they often lack the necessary knowledge and tools to reach Net Zero. The Net Zero Now platform allows small businesses to measure and reduce their carbon emissions using an industry-backed platform that has been created to reflect the needs and requirements of businesses on a sector-by-sector basis.
According to the UN, a business will have reached Net Zero when it has cut its greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, with any remaining emissions re-absorbed from the atmosphere, by oceans and forests for example. The ‘On the Road’ certification is the first milestone of the journey towards Net Zero. The registered certification mark “On the Road to Net Zero” recognises that a business has calculated emissions in accordance with global best practice and set ambitious yet achievable goals in line with the industry standard.
As part of its plans to reach Net Zero, Aspen Waite plans to remove 7,028.28kg/ 7 tonnes of greenhouse gases, a 50% reduction in its scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2030. It will also invest in projects to remove 30% of all scope 3 emissions 16,511.75kg / 16.5 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere within the next 5 years, by 2029. The bulk of reductions will be achieved through switching to more renewable energy providers, along with changes to employee commuting & business travel alike. On a long-term basis Aspen Waite plan to reduce all emissions by 90%; 62,283.36kg/ 62.3 tonnes by 2050.
The Net Zero Now Certification is the final step in a process to assess each business’ progress to Net Zero and provides a recognised and trusted way to communicate that progress to their customers, employees, investors, and other stakeholders. To retain the “On the Road to Net Zero” Certification, businesses must complete and publish a validated carbon footprint and demonstrate continual progress towards reaching their reduction targets each year.
Mark Waite, CEO of Aspen Waite Legacy says: “We are delighted to have reached this important milestone on the way to becoming a Net Zero business. We know our staff and customers want to see us act on climate change and understanding the sources of our emissions is the first step. We are determined to reduce our emissions and build a more sustainable future for our business, our customers and ultimately our planet.”
Simon Heppner, Executive Director of Net Zero Now says: “We are on a mission to help every business in the UK get to Net Zero. It is an absolute pleasure to have Aspen Waite join us on the journey to becoming a Net Zero business. Every firm across the UK should have the tools to take action on the climate crisis and we are proud to offer our platform and certification to companies like Aspen Waite. I encourage more businesses to get on board.”
